Delchem's D-2000 REACTIVE Hot Melt Butyl

IG Sealant PASSES EN1279 Part 3

Provides Significant Advantages Versus All Other IG Sealants

==========================================================

D-2000 REACTIVE Hot Melt Butyl IG Sealant has passed the stringent     European standard for gas-filled IG units, EN1279, Part 3.  The results were recently presented to a Delchem customer by one of Europe's leading testing laboratories.

All of the units that were tested were SINGLE-SEALED with D-2000. No  primary sealant (i.e., polyisobutylene or PIB) was utilized during the fabrication of the units, nor any other sealant of any type.  The units were sealed with D-2000 only.  The units were fabricated with aluminum spacer, desiccant beads, four corner keys, and filled with argon.

The use of D-2000, for fabricating sealed units that will meet the requirements of EN1279, represents a major breakthrough for companies that need to comply with the six parts of EN1279, especially Parts 2, 3 and 6.

   1.  The utilization of D-2000 allows you to eliminate the use of a primary sealant (i.e., PIB).  By no longer applying a primary sealant you will increase production throughput and eliminate a production step, while simultaneously eliminating the costs associated with the purchase and application of PIB.

   2.  If you elect to utilize a sealed unit design, such as the type described for the D-2000 test units, you can feel comfortable that it will be more than adequate.  D-2000 can be used with any spacer material.  However, with the utilization of D-2000 you no longer need to consider the purchase of costly pre-formed, nonmetallic flexible spacer materials, or, primary sealant.

The Delchem customer is in the process of fabricating additional units for testing for compliance with EN1279 Parts 2 and 6.  Delchem will be preparing materials for testing for compliance with Part 4.

Part 5, being the only part of EN1279 not yet published, has been approved, and it is Delchem's understanding that it will be published in the very near future.

                              DELCHEM  .......  VALUE ADDED

In addition to producing D-2000 for sealed unit fabricators, Delchem is part of a team of industry experts that has been providing extremely valuable services to sealed unit and window manufacturers.  The insights and solutions they provide can be summarized:

   -  The team routinely saves sealed unit and window manufacturers from 5% to >10% of their annual sales by implementing production and operating efficiencies previously not employed, full training of all employees relative to the changes to be made, etc.

   -  They have assisted, and continue to assist, sealed unit and window manufacturers understand the full ramifications of EN1279, and most importantly, assist them in all of the necessary functions to be undertaken and accomplished in order to be fully compliant, on a timely basis, with all parts of EN1279, as well as ISO9001/2000.

   -  The team is available to assist your company with either or both functions, whether you are located in the EU or in North America.

The team's fee schedule is realistically established on the number of employees at your facility, number of sealed units/windows manufactured daily, type and number of modifications to be made, etc.

Please feel free to contact John Matukaitis , Marketing Director (jmatukaitis@delchem.com) for more information regarding D-2000, EN1279, or how we can be of assistance regarding the improvement of cost efficiencies, attaining compliance with EN1279, or both

D-2000 REACTIVE Hot Melt Butyl IG Sealant

                     EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS FOR MEETING

                                        ASTM E2190 PROTOCOL

========================================================

IGMA (Insulating Glass Manufacturers Alliance) has been successful in gaining acceptance of ASTM E2190 (the "HIGS" test) in the National Building Code of Canada (NBCC).  Although the change will be reflected in the 2005 edition, IGMA was advised that most code officials would immediately accept the new reference.

IGMA is now certifying IGU to the "new" test methodology, ASTM E2190, which has for all practical purposes, replaced the "old" IGMAC test, CAN/CGSB-12.8-97.

IGCC (Insulating Glass Certification Council) will continue, until January 1, 2005, to offer certification of IGU to either the "old" ASTM E773 774 (the "CBA" test) or to ASTM E2190.  After that date, IGCC will certify IGU to ASTM E2190 only.

IG/window fabricators should inquire to the certifying organization with which they are currently certified relative to the status of ASTM vis-à-vis their specific product(s).  It is our understanding that GANA (IG Division) is endorsing ASTM E2190, and is also encouraging that this standard be allowed to supercede previously recognized standards.

Since the advent and adoption of ASTM E2190, a number of IG fabricators, using Delchem's D-2000 REACTIVE Hot Melt Butyl IG Sealant and different types of spacer system materials, have passed the ASTM E2190 protocol without difficulty.  Six fabricators are in Canada and six are located in the U.S.  Many other companies are continuing to submit test IGU that are fabricated with D-2000 for testing to the ASTM E2190 protocol.

The majority of those fabricators utilizing D-2000 fabricate IGU employ a single seal of D-2000.

Many people within the IGU/window industry are of the opinion that it is significantly more difficult to pass the ASTM E2190 protocol than the "old" IGMAC and CBA tests.  D-2000 is meeting the new test protocol head-on, and doing so very successfully.

No matter how well designed an IG unit may be, and the good workmanship involved in its' fabrication, the IGU will never perform better than the IG sealant that is employed, because if the seal fails, then so does the IGU, causing the unit to fail.

D-2000 REACTIVE Hot Melt Butyl IG Sealant is demonstrating, and continues to build, a very impressive history in passing ASTM E2190.  It remains to be seen if other IG sealants can duplicate this scenario.

THE FUTURE OF HIGH PERFORMANCE, DUAL SEALED

INSULATING GLASS UNITS IS ......... NOW!

                                    Delchem Is Introducing
                   D180 STRUCTURAL PIB (polyisobutylene)

In keeping within its long-standing strategy and commitment of developing IG sealants that create newer and higher standards of performance, Delchem has developed and is now producing, the IG industry's one and only PIB that provides significant structural strengths!

PIB is widely used as the primary seal in dual sealed IGU. The excellent moisture and gas barrier properties and capabilities it provides are well known and scientifically documented.

It is also well documented that PIB is the "weak link" in a dual sealed IGU system. PIB provides no structural properties or strengths (adhesion, cohesion, shear) whatsoever. No chemical cure takes place during the setting of the applied PIB, it remains thermoplastic. The adhesion of PIB sealant to glass and spacer is purely physical in nature and is therefore not resistant to the long-term effect of various and numerous stress forces (i.e., handling the IGU, water, temperature extremes, UV radiation, etc.)

Utilizing similar proprietary technologies, chemistries and production techniques that have made Delchem's D-2000 REACTIVE Hot Melt Butyl IG Sealant the BAT (Best Available Technology) vis-à-vis IGU performance, Delchem is now producing D180 STRUCTURAL PIB.

     1. D180, like D-2000, reacts with atmospheric moisture, crosslinking and forming very substantial and strong covalent chemical bonds with the glass and spacer, unlike "regular" or non-structural PIB, for which no cure takes place.

     2. The resulting crosslinking and chemical bonds provide for outstanding adhesive, cohesive and shear strengths not found with "regular" PIB.

     3. The MVTR (Moisture Vapor Transmission Rate) and GPRa (Gas Permeance Rate, argon), are actually lower than those for "regular" PIB.

     4. D180 is available in two colors; black or gray.

     5. D180 is fully compatible with all known secondary sealants (i.e., polysulfide, polyurethane, hot melt butyl, silicone), spacer materials, corner keys, etc.

     6. D180 is a 100% solids sealant, and contains no hazardous ingredients.

     7. On a cost per gallon basis, D180 is more cost-efficient than "regular" or non-structural PIB.

D180 was developed and is designed for use on automated and semi-automated IGU production lines. It is applied via a 55-gallon hot melt pump and linear extruder, followed by the IGU passing through an oven-press or heated roller press.

D180 allows you to replace the "weak link" of a dual sealed IGU. In essence, when utilizing D180 STRUCTURAL PIB, you have a dual sealed IGU fabricated with two structural sealants, the primary and secondary sealants, not just the secondary sealant alone.

The advent of D180 demonstrates how Delchem continues to set newer and higher standards for IGU performance, meeting and exceeding your requirements.

For complete information and to discuss how D180 STRUCTURAL PIB can help you eliminate the "weak link" in a dual sealed IGU, please contact John Matukaitis, Marketing Director at Delchem.

To our valued customers, potential customers and industry colleagues :

Delchem, Inc. refers to D-2000 REACTIVE Hot Melt Butyl IG Sealant as "the next generation of IG sealants, a sealant that is setting newer and higher performance standards" within the IG industry. We want to take a brief moment of your time and make you aware that "the next generation" and "higher and newer standards" are not advertising phrases, but accurate descriptions based on hard data generated after extensive, comprehensive, and continuous testing.

When all is said and done, you and your customers want an IG unit that will provide an extensive life span. Conservatively speaking, IG units fabricated with D-2000, and good workmanship, will provide 50 years of field service life. Realistically speaking, they will provide 100 years of service.

D-2000 has been used to fabricate millions of IG units, as well as hundreds of test units. Test units have undergone extensive, multiple, consecutive tests in P-1 chambers, IGCC and IGMAC Product Certification testing, CBA testing, etc. Most IG sealant manufacturers will test a set of IG units one time, as a "qualifying" test, and stop at that point. Delchem subjects the same sets of units through multiple, consecutive test cycles in order to stress the IG units well beyond a minimal "one-time qualifying" test cycle. The test results are truly outstanding!

Multiple sets of test units have completed numerous tests, in Delchem’s test chambers, and with the majority of units being tested at third-party, independent testing facilities. A summary of the testing includes more than 120 weeks in Delchem’s high humidity/high temperature chamber with no change in the initial dew point (< -90 degrees F.), four consecutive CBA tests with no change in the original dew point (< -90 degrees F.), through an IGMAC Product Certification test and then through three additional, consecutive "IGMAC weathering cycles" with no change in the original dew point, and more than 80 weeks in a P-1 chamber with no indication of unit degradation. Argon retention is also reported as being well above the industry average. It is important to mention that all test units were single sealed with D-2000. Equally as important, the test units are continuing in testing; i.e., now in a fifth consecutive CBA test, additional weeks in a P-1 chamber, continuing in Delchem’s chambers, etc.

The industry standard is that one week of testing in an "accelerated weathering" test environment equates to one year of field service life.  Considering the preceding test parameters, and that the same sets of units have completed multiple, consecutive test cycles, it is realistic and reasonable to project that IG units fabricated with D-2000 will provide 50 to 100 years of service. D-2000, the next generation of IG sealants, has set, and is continuing to set, newer and higher standards of IG unit performance.

Delchem’s D-2000 REACTIVE Hot Melt Butyl IG Sealant, D-80 Polysulfide, D-90 Polyurethane and D130 Hot Melt Butyl IG sealants are available only from Delchem, Inc., shipped from our plant in Wilmington, DE, and, in Canada for our Canadian customers, through Delchem’s exclusive distributor, Brenntag Canada Inc.
